Three ways to have your mail delivered

There are three basic types of decorative mailboxes for home delivery applications:

One is a homeowner has a mailbox attached to their house where a mail carrier can walk up to the house and deliver their mail.

The next type is the homeowner who has curb side delivery of mail by USPS. In this situation the mail carrier will pull up to the mailbox at the curb out in front of the homeowner’s house and deliver the mail into a mailbox that is approved by the USPS. In addition there are requirements for the height and how far the mailbox can be set back from the curb. A mail carrier can refuse to deliver mail if there is a non-approved mailbox.

If you can't place a letterbox by the road a nice alternative is a decorative wall mounted box or letter slot and book drop for the front door. You can install these on buildings that have a brick, stucco finish and even siding.

Last and probably becoming the most popular, is the cluster mailbox or slot, which are found in apartments and office buildings. Cluster mailboxes are also regulated and approved by the USPS.

Mailbox Installation:

Remember there are certain rules and regulations about the size and placement of mailboxes. We have added a brief summary here for your convenience. If you would like to more please contact your local post office.

  • Mailbox door must be 6"-9" from face of curb.

  • Mailbox height must be 42" to 48". (From bottom of mailbox to ground. This is not the entire post length)

  • Even if your street number is on your mailbox, it should also be displayed on your house. Go here for for the US Postal Service regulations about the standards for letterboxes and other receptacles for receiving mail by letter slot or by a curbside mailbox.
